THE GOAL
Last-mile delivery of assistive technology devices under the AT-Scale project to individuals, schools, and institutions. These included Braille machines, Braille paper, white canes, universal Braille kits, assorted low vision devise, laptops etc.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
KSB finalized the second phase of the last-mile delivery of assistive technology devices under the AT-Scale project to individuals, schools, and institutions. These included Braille machines, Braille paper, white canes, universal Braille kits, assorted low vision devise, laptops etc. A comprehensive report was prepared and presented to CHAI.
As part of the ongoing process from 2024, the Last mile assistive devices provision, a total of 2,034 learners with visual impairments were supported by the project through the provision of various assistive devices and learning materials. These were delivered to 61 special, integrated and inclusive schools and institutions across the country. This presented an opportunity for KSB to carry out needs assessments in 36 schools out of the 61 schools and the status of Braille equipment. During the reporting period, the balance of assistive devices and learning issued included, 50 Braille Kits, 450 reams of Braille papers, 419 white canes, 17 Braille machines and assorted low vision devices. As part of the process, more than 250 faulty Braille machines were repaired and maintained/serviced.
Development of Short Course Curriculum
KSB played a key role in the development, peer review, and finalization of three (3) curricula for short courses under the AT-Scale project targeting personnel in schools and health facilities. The process was supported by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and CHAI. The following curricula for short courses were developed and are ready for implementation:
- Repair and Maintenance of Braille Assistive Devices: Braille machines, refreshable Braille devices and embossers.
- Creation and Use of Digital Accessible Content
- Low Vision & Assistive Technology – HND
Building a World of Play Project
KSB and the Kenya Society for Deaf Children (KSDC) participated in the implementation of a project dubbed Building a World of Play (BaWOP) targeting more than 5,500 children with disabilities up to grade 2 across schools in Kenya. The project was part of the AT-Scale initiative with the support of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI).
Adaptation of Locally Produced Toys & distribution of LEGO Play Boxes to Schools
KSB provided technical support for the adaptation and production of assorted local play toys for use by children with visual impairments under the BaWOP project. Some of these included, but were not limited to, Braille flash cards, sound balls, adapted puzzles and many others. During the period, KSB supported the importation and distribution of 950 boxes of LEGO Duplo and LEGO System. These were distributed in more than 177 schools for children with disabilities across the country, including 55 schools for children with visual impairments. The project activities included the training of 354 teachers on the use of various locally produced play toys and LEGO to support play amongst children with disabilities. KSB provided technical support and training in the visual domain.
