Lillian Muriuki, a learner at Ngoire Primary School, had been experiencing difficulties in class without fully understanding why. Reading from the board, following lessons, and completing assignments often required extra effort, affecting both her participation and academic performance.
During a school eye screening programme conducted through the Vision Impact Project, Lillian was assessed and found to have a refractive error that could be corrected with spectacles. After receiving her glasses, Lillian noticed an immediate improvement. She could see classroom materials more clearly, follow lessons with greater ease, and participate more confidently in school activities.
Her teachers also observed positive changes in her engagement and performance. The simple intervention of providing spectacles helped remove a barrier that had been limiting her educational progress. During a follow-up visit, the project team discovered that Lillian’s spectacle frame had broken. To ensure that her progress was not interrupted, arrangements were made for a replacement pair. Lillian expressed gratitude for the continued support, highlighting how improved vision has helped her learn more effectively and enjoy school with greater confidence.
Her story illustrates how early detection and timely correction of vision problems can have a profound impact on a child’s education and future opportunities.
